Botanical Printed Tote Bag (Flowering Pounding/Tataki Zome)

Learn how to capture the pigments and shapes of nature on fabric utilizing the beautiful tradition of Tataki Zome (aka Flower Pounding) which is done with fresh botanicals and no heat. We’ll venture into the beautiful organic flower field at Windmill Ranch and cut fresh botanicals for our creations.

The workshop will include:

  • history of the technique and demonstrations

  • how to prepare fabric for long lasting prints

  • how to capture clear botanical prints

  • samples to be inspired by

  • guided hands-on practice & exploration

  • individualized instruction and time for everyone to create their beautiful and unique flower-printed textile

Participants will take home their garden-printed tote and a printed worksheet with detailed information on fabric preparation & care, considerations on which types of fabrics & garments are most suitable for this technique, a suggested plant list, plus characteristics to look for when exploring new plants, supply list & reliable suppliers, and step by step instructions for the techniques covered in class.

Workshop fee includes all fresh botanicals & materials to create a flower-printed tote bag. Participants are welcome to bring fresh flowers they’d like to experiment with from their garden/home, but it is not necessary.

Included is a tour the Honeybee Home cut flower garden with farmer Katy. Pick a fresh mason jar bouquet to take home.

Meet The Presenter

Martha is an organic gardener and natural dyer in Cave Creek, Arizona. She cultivates her home garden with veggies, herbs, edible flowers, native pollinator plants, and historic dye plants. Coaxing colors from plants utilizing historic techniques was born from a love of gardening & nature's colors. For Martha, dyeing with plants is a time to slow down, connect with the landscape and plants around us in a reciprocal relationship, and create beauty & joy.
